What kind of steel building
A clear-span portal frame is the standard for storage and production buildings. The dimensions that shape everything else are the floor area, the eaves height and the span. Eaves height sets what racking and which forklifts will fit, and the span decides whether you need internal columns. Settle them with your operation in mind, not just the site boundary.
Many buildings also need crane beams for an overhead travelling crane, a mezzanine for offices, loading doors with dock levellers, or a canopy over a loading area. Each of these adds loads that the frame must be designed for from the start. Adding a crane to a frame that was not designed for one is rarely possible.
Insulation is the other big decision. An unheated store can use single-skin sheeting; anything heated or occupied needs insulated composite panels or built-up cladding.
The steel frame: marking and execution class
Ask for the fabricator's certificate and the declaration of performance for the frame.
The design engineer specifies an execution class, from EXC1 to EXC4, which sets the fabrication and inspection standard under BS EN 1090-2. Most ordinary buildings fall in the lower classes. The fabricator's certification must cover at least the class specified for your building, so check the class on the certificate.

The GDPR applies to your orders; in Ireland the Data Protection Commission is the supervisory authority. If a supplier processes personal data on your behalf, you need a data processing agreement.
Irish companies are registered with the Companies Registration Office. Ask for the company number and VAT number, and check whether prices are quoted with or without VAT.

What happens to your request

Before that business sees your details, we email you its name, address and phone number. We check only that it is a registered business, for example through its Companies Registration Office entry or VAT number, not the quality of its work. We cannot promise that a business will respond; if nobody takes the request within 21 days, we withdraw it. Offrano is not a party to any contract for the work.
Frequently asked questions
What eaves height do I need?
Work back from use: the height of your racking or stacked goods, the lift height of your forklifts, clearance for sprinklers or lighting, and the height of vehicles entering through the doors. Say how you will use the building and the contractor can check it.
Is the steel frame UKCA marked?
It should be. Ask for the fabricator's certificate and check it covers the execution class your engineer specified.
Who handles the groundworks?
Some steel building firms do design, groundworks and erection as one package, others supply and erect the frame only. Make sure the quote says who designs and builds the foundations and slab, because they are often a large share of the cost.
