Article 4 direction: what the term means

A council order that removes specified permitted development rights in an area, so that works normally allowed need a planning application.

Article 4 direction in practice

Local planning authorities can make an Article 4 direction to withdraw particular permitted development rights, often in conservation areas where small changes, such as replacement windows or solar panels on a front roof slope, could harm the character of a street. Where a direction applies, those works need planning permission.

Directions are specific to places and types of work, so check your council's list before relying on permitted development. A new direction can also affect work that already has a lawful development certificate but has not yet started.
