Building warrant in practice
Scotland has its own building standards system. For many types of work, a building warrant must be obtained from the local authority's building standards service before work starts, followed by acceptance of a completion certificate when it is finished. Some minor work is exempt.
Government guidance for installers of energy devices advises contractors in Scotland to check with the building standards service whether a warrant is needed before starting. Rules from England, such as competent person self-certification, do not map directly onto the Scottish system.
