Conservation area in practice
Conservation areas are designated under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 in England and Wales, with equivalent legislation in Scotland. They are areas whose character or appearance it is desirable to preserve or enhance, from historic town centres to villages and Victorian suburbs.
Designation brings extra controls: permission for substantial demolition, restrictions on some permitted development such as equipment on walls or roofs facing a road, notice before most work on trees, and an expectation that materials suit the area. Councils publish maps and appraisals of each area.
