Cyber Essentials in practice
Cyber Essentials, developed by the National Cyber Security Centre and delivered through IASME, covers five technical controls: firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection. The basic level is a verified self-assessment; Cyber Essentials Plus adds hands-on technical testing.
Since 2014, suppliers bidding for certain central government contracts, such as those involving citizens' personal data, have been required to hold Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus, or show equivalent controls. Many private buyers now ask for it too.
