DNO in practice
Great Britain's local electricity networks are run by Distribution Network Operators. Government guidance says solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps and electric vehicle charge points installed in homes or small businesses must be registered with the DNO, so that networks know where these devices are.
Smaller installations usually follow a 'connect and notify' route, where the installer notifies the DNO after installation. Larger ones must 'apply to connect' and wait for approval before installation. The owner remains responsible for making sure the notification or approval is in place.
