World Heritage Site in practice
World Heritage Sites in the UK include historic towns and landscapes such as the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh and Saltaire in West Yorkshire. They are protected mainly through the planning system and through the listed buildings and conservation areas within them.
For home improvements, World Heritage status can restrict permitted development. In England, an air source heat pump in a World Heritage Site must not go on a wall or roof fronting a highway to count as permitted development. In Scotland, permitted development rights for air source heat pumps and for solar panels on homes do not apply within a World Heritage Site at all.
