A front door has to keep out weather, heat loss and intruders, and in a block of flats it is also part of the fire protection for everyone else in the building. Those jobs decide which door is right far more than colour or glazing pattern. Tell us about the door you need, and your request goes, without your name, to door installers near you. Composite, timber, uPVC or steel
Solid timber doors suit period houses and can be repaired and repainted, but they move with the seasons and need maintaining. uPVC panel doors usually cost least, and the infill panel is their weak point. Steel and aluminium doors are used where security or a very modern look is the priority.
The frame and the lock matter as much as the leaf. A strong door in a weak or badly fixed frame is still a weak door.
Security standards: PAS 24, locks and cylinders
Asking for a door set tested to PAS 24 is still a sensible benchmark, and doors carrying the police-backed Secured by Design label have been tested to it.
On many uPVC and composite doors the weak point is the euro cylinder, which can be snapped by an intruder. Ask for a cylinder rated against snapping and fitted flush with the handle, and multi-point locking that engages top, middle and bottom. If your home insurance names particular lock standards, show the policy wording to the installer before ordering.

In Malta: permits, licences and the business behind the quote
Whether the replacement needs a development permit from the Planning Authority depends on what is built and where; in apartment blocks, the rules of the condominium also apply. Ask before you commit, and let the business tell you which documents it needs from you.
Electrical installation work is carried out by licensed electricians; ask to see the licence and the certificate for the finished installation. Maltese businesses are registered with the Malta Business Registry, so ask for the company registration and VAT numbers, and check whether the quote includes VAT.

Does my new front door need to meet Part Q?
No. A replacement door does not have to meet it by law, but choosing a door set tested to PAS 24 gives you a comparable level of burglary resistance.
Can I replace the front door of my flat?
Check your lease first. You will usually need consent, and the new door must be a certified fire door set with a self-closer.
What is anti-snap about?
Many uPVC and composite doors use a euro cylinder lock. Cheaper cylinders can be broken at a weak point, opening the lock. Cylinders rated against snapping, fitted with security handles, close that gap.
How do I check a business in Malta?
Ask for its company registration number, which you can check with the Malta Business Registry, and its VAT number.
