Frame materials and glazing
Aluminium allows slim frames and large panes and is typical for modern extensions and bi-fold doors. Composite frames combine a timber inside with an aluminium outer face.
Double glazing is standard. Triple glazing adds weight and cost, and in the milder parts of the country the benefit is smaller than the brochures suggest. For sash windows there are double-glazed timber sashes with slim units, and secondary glazing is an option where the original windows must stay. Ask for the whole-window U-value or energy rating, not only the figure for the glass.
In Malta: permits, licences and the business behind the quote
Whether the replacement needs a development permit from the Planning Authority depends on what is built and where; in apartment blocks, the rules of the condominium also apply. Ask before you commit, and let the business tell you which documents it needs from you.
Electrical installation work is carried out by licensed electricians; ask to see the licence and the certificate for the finished installation. Maltese businesses are registered with the Malta Business Registry, so ask for the company registration and VAT numbers, and check whether the quote includes VAT.

Before that business sees your details, we email you its name, address and phone number. We check only that it is a registered business, for example through its Malta Business Registry entry or VAT number, not the quality of its work. We cannot promise that a business will respond; if nobody takes the request within 21 days, we withdraw it. Offrano is not a party to any contract for the work.
Frequently asked questions
Is triple glazing worth it?
It reduces heat loss further but costs more and adds weight to the frame. Whether it pays back depends on the house, the frame quality and how long you stay. A well-fitted double-glazed window with a good energy rating often makes more difference than the third pane.
What should I do with old sash windows?
Ask a joiner experienced with sash windows before deciding.
Will I be contacted by lots of window companies?
No. The request goes to one installer only, and we tell you by email who it is before it gets your details.
How do I check a business in Malta?
Ask for its company registration number, which you can check with the Malta Business Registry, and its VAT number.
