ECO4 in practice
The Energy Company Obligation places a legal duty on medium and large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency measures, such as insulation and heating upgrades, for households that are on low incomes, fuel poor or vulnerable. It is administered by Ofgem, and the current phase is known as ECO4.
Households do not apply to Ofgem directly; they are usually reached through suppliers, installers or local authority referral routes. ECO4 is due to end on 31 December 2026, so work relying on it needs to be completed before then. Be cautious of cold callers claiming free measures under the scheme and check who is behind an offer.
