Felling licence in practice
In England, a felling licence from the Forestry Commission is needed to fell more than a set volume of growing trees in a calendar quarter, with exemptions including trees in gardens, orchards, churchyards and public open spaces. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own licensing bodies and rules.
For most domestic garden trees a felling licence is not the issue; a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area notice is. Larger plots, farmland and woodland are different, so check before felling.
