Smart Export Guarantee in practice
Since 1 January 2020, the Smart Export Guarantee has required some electricity suppliers, known as SEG Licensees, to offer payment for electricity exported by small-scale low-carbon generators such as solar PV. Payments are based on export meter readings.
Each licensee sets its own rate, contract length and terms; the only price rule is that the rate must be above zero. You can choose any licensee, not only your own supplier. Installations up to 50 kW must show suitable certification, usually through MCS. The scheme does not apply in Northern Ireland.
