MCS in practice
MCS sets product standards for small-scale renewable technologies and installation standards that define how a certified installer should design and install a system using certified products. Certified installers must also meet MCS consumer protection requirements, and MCS offers a route for complaints.
Certification matters because schemes depend on it. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme only works through MCS certified installers, export tariffs under the Smart Export Guarantee require suitable certification for small installations, and permitted development for air source heat pumps in England requires compliance with the MCS planning standard. Keep the MCS certificate you receive after installation.
