A home charge point is a small box on a wall, but it adds one of the largest loads your electricity supply will ever carry. Getting it right means a new circuit, correct earthing, a check of your main fuse and a charger that meets the smart charging rules. This page explains what the installer looks at, which permissions apply and what grants remain. When you send a request, exactly one installer in your area can take it.

What a charger quote should cover
- the charger model and power rating, and confirmation that it meets the smart charge point regulations
- the cable route, cable size and any drilling, trenching or surface-mounted trunking
- consumer unit work, earthing solution and any load management
- whether the network operator needs to be told or the supply upgraded
- setting up the app and default charging hours, and compatibility with your tariff
- for grant jobs, the OZEV authorisation and who handles the application
Charge points for businesses and blocks of flats
Workplace, fleet and communal installations raise different questions: several chargers sharing a limited supply, who pays for the electricity, access control, maintenance and, for landlords, updating the fire risk assessment. The residential landlord grant asks applicants to have arranged maintenance checks, decided how running costs are paid and updated the property's risk assessment before applying. It is worth asking for these points in writing whether or not you use a grant.
Make a requestIn Ireland: planning, registration and VAT
Whether the installation needs planning permission depends on what is built and where. Many small works on a house are exempted development within set limits, but that exemption does not apply everywhere, for example to protected structures. Ask your county or city council's planning office before you commit if you are unsure.
Electrical work in homes is carried out by Registered Electrical Contractors, and gas work by Registered Gas Installers; ask to see the registration before work starts. Check whether the quote includes VAT, which Revenue charges at different rates depending on the goods and services involved.

What happens to your request
You confirm your mobile number with a text code and your email address with a link. We then show the request to businesses in your area, without your name or contact details. Only one business can take it on; it pays Offrano for the request, and it costs you nothing.
Before that business sees your details, we email you its name, address and phone number. We check only that it is a registered business, for example through its Companies Registration Office entry or VAT number, not the quality of its work. We cannot promise that a business will respond; if nobody takes the request within 21 days, we withdraw it. Offrano is not a party to any contract for the work.
Frequently asked questions
Will installing a charger need a new electricity supply?
Sometimes. If your main fuse or the supply cable is too small for the extra load, the installer tells the network operator, which may upgrade it. Load management that reduces charging when the house is busy can avoid an upgrade in many homes.
How many installers receive my request?
One. The request is sold once and then removed, and we tell you who bought it before they see your details. If nobody takes it within 21 days, it is withdrawn.
Does the quote include VAT?
Ask the business to show VAT separately. Irish VAT rates depend on the goods and services involved.

Can I withdraw my request?
Yes, through the link in any email from Offrano. If a business has already taken it on, we pass your withdrawal to it straight away.
What does the request cost me?
Nothing. The business that takes on your request pays Offrano for it. Whether you accept its quote is entirely up to you.
