Edinburgh has its own ways of keeping a space free for a removal: a quick dispensation for a van on a restricted street, a longer-notice suspension of permit or pay-and-display bays, and a short temporary permit when residents change parking zone. On top of that, the city centre is a Low Emission Zone where non-compliant vans are fined rather than charged. Your request is passed to one removal company only.

Dispensation or suspension

A dispensation allows a vehicle to park where it normally could not, for example for furniture or home removals. The council's parking contractor needs at least 24 hours' notice, the location, the start and end times, the company name and the vehicle registration, and charges an administration fee per vehicle and location, paid by card before the request is processed.

A suspension keeps bays clear altogether. It needs three days' notice, excluding weekends, for resident permit spaces and two days for public parking bays, and is charged at the parking rate for that street. The council puts up a suspension board at least three working days before. Both applications are made by form and email; the office handles them on weekday mornings and early afternoons, so do not leave them to a Friday afternoon.

Changing parking zone

If you hold a residents' permit and move to another zone or priority parking area, the council can issue a five-day temporary permit for your old address while you move. You need evidence linking you to the new address, preferably your council tax registration, and you cancel the old permit in your online account before applying for the new one. Permits are electronic, so there is nothing to display.

The Low Emission Zone

Edinburgh's city centre is one of Scotland's four Low Emission Zones, operating around the clock, every day of the year. Unlike English Clean Air Zones, there is no daily charge you can pay to drive in with a non-compliant vehicle: you receive a penalty, which doubles for repeat entries by the same vehicle within 90 days. Vans need Euro 6 for diesel or Euro 4 for petrol; lorries need Euro VI.

A removal company working in Edinburgh regularly will run compliant vehicles, but a hired van or a firm coming from further away may not. Ask.

Tenement stairs and the date of entry

Many Edinburgh flats are in tenements with a shared stair, often several floors up and without a lift. Large furniture may need to be dismantled or, occasionally, hoisted. Tell the removal company the floor, the stair and anything unusual about the door or turns.

In Scotland the move is tied to the date of entry agreed in the missives. Settlement, when you receive the keys, usually happens on that date, so book the removal for it, and ask the company what happens if settlement is delayed into the afternoon.
