The Low Emission Zone: a fine, not a fee
Glasgow's city centre is one of Scotland's four Low Emission Zones, alongside Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh. It operates 24 hours a day, every day, including public holidays. In England, the driver of a non-compliant van in a Clean Air Zone can pay a daily charge. In Scotland you cannot prepay to avoid a penalty: the vehicle is simply fined, and the fine doubles each time the same vehicle enters the same zone within 90 days.
Vans must meet Euro 6 for diesel or Euro 4 for petrol, and lorries Euro VI. That matters for city centre flats, for student moves in and out of central accommodation and for any route that cuts through the centre. A removal van from a company based outside the city, or a van hired cheaply for the weekend, is where the risk lies.

Closes, stairs and shared back courts
A Glasgow tenement flat is usually reached through a shared close and a common stair, often without a lift, and the building may have a secure entry system. Removal crews need to know the floor, the width of the stair at its tightest turn and whether the close door can be held open. Wardrobes and large sofas may have to be dismantled.
The stair and close belong to all the owners in common. Protecting the walls and banisters during the move is a courtesy to the neighbours and avoids arguments about damage afterwards. It is worth letting neighbours know the date.

When you buy in Scotland, the date of entry is agreed in the missives, the exchange of letters between the solicitors that forms the contract. Settlement, when you get possession of the home and the keys, usually happens on that date. Your solicitor collects the disposition, the deeds and the keys once the price is paid.
Book the removal for the date of entry, and ask the company how it handles a settlement that runs late into the afternoon. Some people store part of their belongings for a night rather than risk a crew waiting for keys.

Parking and access
Many tenement streets have residents' parking controls or are simply full. Glasgow City Council manages parking suspensions and dispensations for the city; ask the removal company whether it will apply and how much notice the council currently needs. Where there is a back lane, it may give better access than the front street.
