Moving house in Bradford: the Clean Air Zone reaches further than you think

The council describes the zone as the area inside, and including, the Bradford outer ring road, extended along the Aire valley corridor around Manningham Lane, Bradford Road and Canal Road to include Shipley and Saltaire. Government figures put it at more than nine square miles, several times the size of the zones in Birmingham, Bristol or Sheffield.

The practical consequence: in Bradford it is not only city centre flats that are affected. Terraced streets, semis and family houses inside the ring road and in Shipley and Saltaire are in the zone as well. If either address is inside it, or the route between them crosses it, the vehicles used for the move need checking.

Bradford's zone is class C. That means buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, vans and minibuses that do not meet the emission standard pay a daily charge; private cars do not. For vans, the minimum standard is Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4 for petrol, which rules out many older diesel vans still in use for small moves.

The charge can be paid up to six days before driving in the zone, on the day, or up to six days afterwards, through the government's Clean Air Zone service. Unpaid charges lead to a penalty. Ask the removal company whether its vehicles are compliant; if you are hiring a van yourself, check the registration before you collect it.

Much of Bradford's older housing is stone-built terraces on sloping streets, often with steps up to the front door and narrow rear lanes.
