Moving house in Bristol: what the Clean Air Zone and parking rules mean

Bristol's Clean Air Zone is class D, the strictest type in England. Non-compliant private petrol and diesel cars pay a daily charge, as do non-compliant vans under 3.5 tonnes; heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay considerably more. The zone covers a compact area of central Bristol, so it matters whenever an old or new address, or the route between them, lies inside it. The council publishes a map and a vehicle checker.

For a removal that means three things to check: the removal company's vans and lorries, any van you hire for yourself, and your own car if you are shuttling boxes. Older diesel cars in particular often fail the standard. Checking the registration on the government's vehicle checker takes a minute; a penalty takes longer to sort out.

Bristol City Council lets you suspend a marked bay, whether a residents' bay, shared-use bay, pay and display or limited waiting bay, and names domestic removals as an accepted reason. Suspensions are charged per day for each bay of up to five metres. The council says it will not confirm approval; it only gets in touch if it needs more information.

Where there are no marked bays, a dispensation lets a vehicle park on a yellow line or have an area of unrestricted road coned off. It is charged per five-metre length per day, with a daily maximum. Both need three working days to process, which is shorter than in many cities, but in residents' parking schemes, where free space is rare, earlier is better.

Bristol's older neighbourhoods rise steeply from the harbour, and many Victorian and Georgian houses have steps up to the front door, basements and tall, narrow stairs. Conversions into flats are common. A removal company needs to know the floor, whether furniture has to go through a window, and how far the vehicle can get to the door. In some terraced streets a smaller van shuttling from a lorry parked further away is the practical answer.

Ask whether the quote includes the Clean Air Zone charge for any non-compliant vehicle, who applies for the suspension or dispensation, and whether the fee is included. If your move within the zone takes more than one day, remember that each day is a separate charge. If a building has a managing agent, ask it about lift bookings and protection for communal areas before you confirm a date.
