Good event catering is as much about logistics as food: where the kitchen is, how many staff serve, how hot dishes stay hot and what happens to allergy requests. Before you book, it pays to check a caterer's hygiene rating and how it handles allergens, because both are areas where the law is specific. Describe your event once and a single caterer that works in your area can take it on.
- Exactly one business. Your request is handed out once. After that, no other business sees it.
- You know who will be in touch. Before the business receives your contact details, we send you its name, address and phone number.
- Withdraw at any time. You can withdraw your consent at any time – using the link in our email.
Service styles and what they mean for the price
A seated meal with plated courses needs the most staff and the most kitchen space, and it gives you the most control over timing. A buffet or sharing platters need fewer servers but more food, because portions are not controlled. Canapés and bowl food suit standing receptions and evening events. A barbecue or food truck is relaxed and often cheaper to staff, but it depends on the weather and on space outside for cooking.
Beyond the menu, the price is driven by guest numbers, the number of serving staff and chefs, hire of crockery, glassware, linen and furniture, travel, and how long staff are on site. Drinks may be a separate arrangement; if the caterer supplies alcohol at a venue without its own licence, a licence or temporary event notice is needed, which is covered below.
Most caterers ask for a final guest number and dietary list a week or two before the event. Agree what happens if numbers change after that point, because food ordered and staff booked are usually charged anyway.
- the menu per head, and what the minimum number of guests is
- staff: chefs, servers and bar staff, with their hours on site
- equipment and hire: crockery, cutlery, glassware, linen, tables, chafing dishes
- who clears, washes up and takes the rubbish away
- travel and set-up, and any access or kitchen requirements at the venue
- how dietary needs and allergies are handled and labelled
Venues, licences and practical checks
Many venues have a list of approved caterers or charge a fee for bringing in an outside one. Check this before you get attached to a menu. Ask what kitchen facilities exist, whether there is power and water for a marquee or field, and when the caterer can get in to set up.
A temporary event notice covers events with fewer than 500 people at all times, including staff, and has to be given at least 10 clear working days before the event.
Make a requestIn Ireland: data protection and registration
The GDPR applies to photos and guest lists; in Ireland the Data Protection Commission is the supervisory authority. If a supplier processes personal data on your behalf, you need a data processing agreement.
Irish companies are registered with the Companies Registration Office. Ask for the company number and VAT number, and check whether prices are quoted with or without VAT.

How your request reaches one business
You confirm your mobile number with a text code and your email address with a link. We then show the request to businesses in your area, without your name or contact details. Only one business can take it on; it pays Offrano for the request, and it costs you nothing.
Before that business sees your details, we email you its name, address and phone number. We check only that it is a registered business, for example through its Companies Registration Office entry or VAT number, not the quality of its work. We cannot promise that a business will respond; if nobody takes the request within 21 days, we withdraw it. Offrano is not a party to any contract for the work.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check a caterer's food hygiene rating?
Search for the business on the Food Standards Agency's food hygiene rating website. It shows the rating from 0 to 5 and the date of the last inspection.
Does Natasha's Law apply to wedding and event catering?
Usually not directly. It covers food that is prepacked for direct sale, such as sandwiches packed on site before customers choose them. Food plated or served from platters at your event is not prepacked, but the caterer must still be able to tell guests which of the 14 allergens each dish contains.
How far in advance should I book a caterer?
Popular dates for weddings and summer parties are booked well ahead, so start as soon as you have a date and venue. Corporate lunches and smaller parties can often be arranged at shorter notice. Final numbers and dietary lists are usually needed a week or two before.
Who regulates data protection in Ireland?
The Data Protection Commission, under the GDPR.

What does the request cost me?
Nothing. The business that takes on your request pays Offrano for it. Whether you accept its quote is entirely up to you.
Why does only one business get my request?
So that you are not called by several firms at once. The business that takes it on has the request to itself.
